On Saturday, members of all of the political parties in the municipal council of Assen will turn the pedestrian crossing at the Koopmansplein into a rainbow with chalk.
RTV Drenthe reports that the initiative originally came from GroenLinks. Plans for a permanent rainbow pedestrian crossing between the Weierspoort and De Nieuwe Kolk are in development.
Awareness
Rainbow pedestrian crossings are a popular gesture to raise awareness of social issues faced by the LGBTQI+ community. Nearly 30 cities across the Netherlands, including Groningen and Winschoten in the northern provinces, have created rainbow pedestrian crossings since 2013.
