The refurbishment of a six meter tall statue of a dog in Assen is at the center of a legal battle. The statue, titled Mannes, was refurbished by the municipality after poor maintenance. However the statue’s creator, visual artist Q.S. Serafijn, calls the result of this refurbishment “disastrous”.
According to Serafijn, the refurbishment took place without notifying him or asking for input. The other party involved in the construction of Mannes, architect Maurice Nio was similarly not regarded. Therefore, this occurrence is a serious infringement of his copyright.
The statue was originally mounted in front of a newly constructed station building in 2018. Last November Mannes was towed away in parts and transported to a specialized repair company in Werkendam.
