From the far-right to the ecological left, the RUG has produced a whole host of politicians
By Thomas Ansell
As reported by university paper the UKrant, the University of Groningen’s next alumni meet-up could include a whole host of Dutch members of parliament. There are 15 RUG alumni in the Tweede Kamer– which would make them the joint fourth-largest party (with the CDA), were they to form one voting bloc.
There is quite a lot of diversity within the RUG-alumni, though. The best-known alumni is the Socialist Party member and archaeologist Sandra Beckerman, who was number two on her parties’ list for the 2021 elections.
Ex-RUGers also represent Mark Rutte’s VVD party, the PvdA (Labour party), D66 of Sigrid Kaag; the Partij voor de Dieren (PvdD), and the CDA of health minister Hugo De Jonge. Despite the RUG’s reputation for academic excellence, an ex-student even represents the reprehensible PVV.
The most popular study history for Dutch MP’s from the RUG is Law and International Relations.
