The comeback will have to wait a little longer
Arjen Robben may soon make his comeback on the training field of FC Groningen, but not quite yet: the club announced on Sunday that, based on medical tests, he would not be present at the first group training session of the new post-lockdown period. However, Robben said to RTV Noord that he skipped the training as a precaution, because he twisted his ankle in the grass on Saturday afternoon.
According to Robben, no one needs to worry about an injury. “We decided to take the gas off for a few days,” said Robben. “But we shouldn’t make it bigger than it is.” The Bedumer further indicated in an interview that he is currently quite fit. “I am further than I could have hoped for,” said Robben. “Based on all tests, all lights are on green.”
Robben is aiming to train as quickly as possible and then to play matches. The main goal is to play real league games as much as possible. And Robben could be asked to play with the captain’s armband in this, even if he himself says he does not want to claim that title. “I’ll share my experiences when asked, but I’m not going to be the big boy on my own,” said Robben.
The footballer said during the interview that he had not yet discussed the position in which he will play. Robben did acknowledge that he had also approached Eljero Elia (currently playing at newly-crowned Turkish champions Istanbul BB), whom he still knows from the Dutch national team, to come and play at FC Groningen.
The FC Groningen first team completed their first training session on Monday morning. Robben trained indoors on an exercise bike.
