A 1.8 magnitude quake struck near Westeremden (Gemeente Loppersum)
An earthquake occurred this morning at Westeremden, a village north of Groningen, with a magnitude of 1.8 on the Richter scale. Several residents have reported the quake on social media, saying that it was a strong shock, with the houses creaking and shaking for a moment, GIC.nl reports
The KNMI previously reported a quake with a magnitude of 1.9, with Loppersum itself as the epicenter. This was later adjusted with the epicenter moved to Westeremden.
On Saturday there was also an earthquake at Rottum with a magnitude of 1.3. This year’s worst quake had a magnitude of 2.7. It took place on July 14 at Loppersum.
Earthquakes in the Province of Groningen are nothing new, with widescale gas extraction in the region having induced large numbers of earthquakes since the mid-2000’s.
