Museum aan de A received a remarkable gift on Friday in the form of a painting with a rich history, the Groninger Internet Courant reports. The artwork, previously displayed in the hotel-restaurant ‘Bij Koos Kerstholt,’ was donated by an elderly woman who prefers to remain anonymous.
The painting, measuring nearly two meters in width, offers a glimpse into Groningen’s past, portraying the iconic Grote Markt as it appeared in 1773.
Koos Kerstholt: A legacy preserved
Once a cherished establishment situated on the side of the Vismarkt, Koos Kerstholt endured as a hotel-restaurant for many years. However, tragedy struck on the night of January 27-28, 1966, when a fire ravaged parts of the building. Undeterred by the setback, the resilient proprietor, Koos Kerstholt, launched a new venture in the same location: ‘Bij Koos Kerstholt.’
In the aftermath of the fire, local resident and amateur painter Ties Timmer extended a heartfelt gesture to recreate the lost ambiance of the original establishment. Timmer meticulously crafted 24 paintings reminiscent of those lost in the blaze, culminating in an auction held in 1986 following Kerstholt’s passing.
The resurrection of history
This latest addition to Museum aan de A’s collection is not merely a painting; it is a vivid snapshot of Groningen’s bygone era. Transporting viewers back to the bustling Grote Markt of 1773, the artwork captures the architectural marvels that defined the cityscape. From the majestic Martini Church to the imposing Town Hall, each brushstroke breathes life into the vibrant tapestry of Groningen’s past.
The benevolent donor behind this extraordinary gift remains shrouded in mystery, her identity concealed by choice. A native of Groningen, her affection for the city inspired her to bestow this artwork upon Museum aan de A, ensuring it finds a home where it can be appreciated by all.
Embracing modernity: Museum aan de A’s transformation
