The Board of the University of Groningen has appointed professor Andrej Zwitter as dean of the UG/Campus Fryslân, effective from 1 January 2019.
Zwitter is currently a Professor of Governance and Innovation. He will be succeeding Prof. Jouke de Vries, who was appointed Chair of the Board of the University on 1 October this year. The appointment will cover a period of four years, ending on 1 January 2023. Andrej Zwitter (Klagenfurt, 1982), together with Piet Bouma, will form the Board of the UG’s eleventh faculty. Zwitter has been the interim Dean at UG/Campus Fryslân since Jouke de Vries left.
“It is a great honour and a privilege to serve as the first international dean”, says Andrej Zwitter. “Fryslân has welcomed the Campus with open arms; and it is my pledge that we will make the eleventh faculty a faculty of and for Fryslân and provide through education and research a global experience locally. Internationalization can only work if we remain committed to our local roots. And global challenges can only be tackled if we incorporate local knowledge and foster regional contacts. This is what Campus Fryslân aims to achieve in the coming years!”
Correction: An earlier version stated that Zwitter was the first non-Dutch dean of a University of Groningen faculty. This information was based on a press release and was not correct. Kocku von Stuckrad has served as the dean of Theology and Religious Studies since 2013, and a number of other non-Dutch deans have served at the university throughout its history.
