The calf is called Ka Yan, meaning ‘long awaited child’
An elephant was born last night in Wildlands Zoo in Emmen; a male of about 80 kilos, reports RTV Drenthe.
According to Wildlands, he is healthy and can already stands by himself. “It all looks good and healthy! The youngster has already suckled from its mother Mingalar Oo. She is also doing well,” said the zoo.
Ka Yan was born around half past twelve last night. In elephants, delivery takes place in the herd, with adult females protect the birthing mother, and helping the calf stand up. According to Wildlands, Ka Yan was soon on his feet, but has not left his mother’s side at the moment. Ka Yan is the mother’s sixth calf.
The last two calves were born in Wildlands in 2018. The herd in Emmen now numbers eleven elephants: three adult women, an adult bull, six young bulls and this newborn calf.
