American ambassador to the Netherlands Pete Hoekstra, who was born in Groningen, paid the province a visit on Thursday.
The Groninger Internet Courant reports that Hoekstra was in the province to visit Eemsdelta to find out more about developments in and around the Eemshaven, including offshore activities and the largest wind park in the Netherlands. The ambassador’s entourage also visited the chemical industry cluster in Delfzijl.
Hoekstra’s parents owned a bakery in Groningen and he was born in the city in 1953, and his family moved to the United States when he was three years old. During his visit to the province this week, Hoekstra was joined by Cas König, the director of Groningen Seaports, and economic affairs alderperson Patrick Brouns.
The ambassador paid his first visit to the city in March of last year, during which Groningen mayor Peter den Oudsten presented him with his birth certificate.
