Groningen alderperson Roeland van der Schaaf is calling for the academic institutions in the city to provide room assignments to international students immediately after they are accepted.

Van Der Schaaf told RTV Noord that he believes his proposed approach would help solve the pressing room shortage that new international students face. The local aldersperson also expressed support for building additional housing for up to 1,500 students at the Zernike campus.
Van Der Schaaf is reportedly planning to sit down with representatives from the University of Groningen and the Hanze University of Applied Sciences in the coming weeks to discuss the options.
The two-fold approach would help spare incoming students the uncertainty and stress of searching for a room and make all students less vulnerable to predatory landlords who charge more than they are legally permitted.
