Supermarket Albert Heijn has issued a recall for some of their red seedless grapes due to a health hazard.
their 500 grams and 250 grams of red seedless grapes with product codes 44-G or G-44 because of a health hazard.
In a statement, Albert Heijn said the issue affects their 250- and 500-gramme packs of red seedless grapes with product codes 44-G or G-44. It said the grapes contain an excess level of the plant growth regulator Ethephon which can be harmful for humans.
Ethephon is the world’s most widely used plant growth regulator. The product is also used in the cultivation of wheat, coffee, tobacco, cotton, and fruit to help the product reach maturity more quickly. If too much of the product is ingested it can cause diarrhoea and stomach cramps.
Customers are requested to not eat the affected grapes and to return them to any Albert Heijn store where they will get their money back. The supermarket has a form that people can fill in if they have bought the product online.
