The student introduction week in Leeuwarden is back after a two-year hiatus. The activities, known as LEIP (Leeuwarden Eerstejaars Introductie Periode, or ‘Leeuwarden First Year Introduction Period’), have been a popular tradition in the Frisian capital for years now, but COVID caused the organizers to push back most of its live events.
The week-long activities will begin August 15 with a live concert by Davina Michelle and appearances from surprise musical guests.
In addition to the traditional music festival, the organizers plan several new activities this year, including a student walk, a sports afternoon, a Sing-a-long karaoke evening, and a picnic in the Prinsentuin where “you can quietly recover from the LEIP! Festival the night before and […] enjoy Leeuwarden’s most famous ice cream, La Venezia, and learn more about Leeuwarden!”
For the first time, the Leeuwarden introduction week will be held the week before the Study Start Week. The LEIP! Week is organized by Leeuwarden Student City and a group of enthusiastic student volunteers to introduce all first year university students to the life in Leeuwarden. During this week, the organizers say, the participants can meet a lot of new people, make new friends, and “get to know all aspects of Leeuwarden and student life, such as sports, culture and student associations.”
LEIP! primarily targets first-year students of NHL Stenden, Van Hall Larenstein, and the University of Groningen / Campus Fryslân. Master students, who pursue their degrees in Leeuwarden, are welcome, too. LEIP! is also open to international students. The organizers say they typically place international students in mixed groups of Dutch and English-speaking students.
Last orders for the LEIP! Festival will be accepted on Sunday, August 14, so if you plan to attend, make sure to buy your tickets in advance.
