Ice on the roads created hazardous driving conditions in Friesland, Groningen and Drenthe on Friday morning. One person was killed in a car accident in Barger-Compascuum when the car he was in crashed into a tree. Another passenger was taken to hospital with serious injuries. Police say they are investigating the incident.
Accidents also occurred earlier this morning in Emmen and the Drenthe village of Meppen. No one was injured in those collisions, but icy road conditions were believed to be the cause.
Ice led to slippery Friday rush hour roads in and around the city of Groningen, too, putting extra pressure on the emergency departments of the University Medical Center and the Martini Hospital.
Earlier, the KNMI weather bureau issued a code yellow weather warning for Friday morning, saying there will be slippery conditions on the roads, particularly in the northern provinces.
