The awards, which are presented annually by the Leeuwarder Courant, honour research and projects created by attendees of the various academic institutions in Friesland. The regional universities of applied sciences, research universities and vocational education programmes submitted 22 entries for this year’s edition.
The jury recognised Miranda Hoekstra, a student at NHL-Stenden University of Applied Sciences, for setting up a foundation called No Need to Hide. The foundation provides a helping hand to people who have been victims of sexual assault. Another NHL-Stenden student, Esmee Glas, won the audience award for her research into what causes bed sores.
Masters students Guillem Belmar Viernes and Sara Gomes de Oliviera Pinho won the research university-level award for their work at RUG/Campus Fryslân focused on how intelligible Frisian is for Dutch speakers.
The best vocational education project was the Talenpaviljoen, which students at Friese Poort helped to build. Eight students from the school were recognised for their contribution: Sjouke Hoornstra, Loes Walrecht, Yorick Sietsma, Nick Doosje, Richard Rodenhuis, Egbert Hazewindus, Wieger Henryk Brouwer and Michiel de Wolff.
Each of the winners received a cash prize of 333.33 euros, a statuette and an invitation to speak at a TEDx event in October. The jury for the 2018 edition of the awards consisted of education commissioner Sander de Rouwe, education alderperson Hilde Tjeerdema, social entrepreneur Geesje Duursma and the editor-in-chief of the Leeuwarder Courant, Sander Warmerdam.
