Omrop Fryslan reports that Henk Leutscher founded the free tour in Leeuwarden after being inspired by similar tours in other major cities. A Guide to Leeuwarden has different themes, such as the Street Art Tour, which features many of the newest graffiti murals in the city, the 11stegentocht (Eleven Allies Tour) and the Mata Hari tour, which visits locations associated with the famous alleged spy who was born in the city.

The company now has ten tour guides, and includes tours in Dutch, English and German, and private tour options have been added over the years. The next English-language tour will be on Saturday, 24 August from 12 to 1:30 p.m.
Across the provincial border, Alternative Groningen Tour offers similar guided routes through the city focused on the less common tourist spots. Similar to the Leeuwarden tours, participants are encouraged to pay what they think the tour is worth. Outside of the north, Amsterdam and Utrecht also host free guided tours in English.
