Train services in Groningen and Friesland remain disrupted Friday morning due to ongoing track subsidence near Groningen Central Station, regional operator Arriva has confirmed.
Local trains are running between Groningen Europapark and both Veendam and Bad Nieuweschans, but express train services between Groningen and Winschoten are canceled for the day due to limited train availability. Trains between Groningen Central and Groningen Europapark are still not operating, as repair work continues on the damaged section of track.
Passengers traveling to Veendam, Bad Nieuweschans, and Assen must transfer at Groningen Europapark, with NS providing bus services to connect with Groningen Central.
Arriva stated that logistical challenges caused by the subsidence have compounded the disruptions. With trains stored at the De Vork yard near Europapark, the company has been unable to move them to Groningen Central, leading to cancellations of several key services:
– Groningen-Warffum: Morning express trains, including the 7:35 and 8:05 a.m. departures from Warffum, were canceled.
– Groningen-Winschoten: Express services throughout the day remain suspended, with cancellations affecting key morning and afternoon departures from Winschoten (e.g., 7:25 a.m., 8:55 a.m., 5:25 p.m.) and Groningen (e.g., 6:37 a.m., 8:07 a.m., 6:37 p.m.).
– Leeuwarden-Sneek: Morning and afternoon express services, including the 7:07 a.m. from Leeuwarden and the 7:36 a.m. from Sneek, have been canceled.
Arriva aims to resume full service by Saturday but awaits an update from ProRail, the organization responsible for track maintenance. A further announcement is expected later today.
Passengers are advised to check live schedules and prepare for delays.
