According to Dagblad van het Noorden, the majority of the money was raised in the Charity Run portion of the event. Famous athletes with connections to the north, including Arjen Robben, FC Groningen’s keeper Sergio Padt and Arjan Taaij, coach of the Dutch professional volleyball team Lycurgus, participated in the run. Other participants were able to make a donation upon signing up for the event.
The Groninger Internet Courant reports that the winner of the men’s race was Davis Kiplangat from Kenya with a time of 17 minutes and 12 seconds, which was six seconds short of tying the record for the marathon. The runners with the best times – last year’s winner, Victor Chumo of Kenya, and Albert Rob from Bahain – did not set any course records, likely due to the record-breaking temperatures on Sunday. The Dutch runner with the fastest time, Mohamed Ali, finished the course in 18 minutes and 13 seconds.
In the women’s competition, Eva Cherono from Kenya, Valentine Mateiko from Kenya and Susan Krumins of the Netherlands were the first, second and third place finishers: Cherono’s time was 19:50 and Maetiko’s time was 19:58. Maureen Koster continues to hold the record for the course.
