As reported in the Coevorder Courant, fitness fanatic from Coevorden (Drenthe) Silvana Hoebrichts has raised 4,223 euros and 60 cents by completing a burpee marathon. A burpee is an exercise where, starting from a squatting position, you kick both legs out until you are in a plank, jump back, then stand up.
“I’m really proud”, said Hoebrichts, “I didn’t think that I would make it, after 2.5 hours my groin began to give me issues and it only got worse.” Her initial fundraising target was 2,400 euros, but in the end she raised significantly more.
“At the end I couldn’t do anything else. I had to constantly cry. When it came to the last minute I have 50 people there supporting me. They helped me and pushed me through”, she said. Hoebrichts began on Saturday at 12:00, and went through the night. “During a power-nap my body kept contracting, it stayed doing burpees.”
“When I was in Curaçao at christmas, I saw images of the various bush-fires in Australia, and during the holiday I saw lots more pictures. I tried to ignore it.” But after a while she couldn’t shut the news out any longer. “I cried for an hour, and thought it egotistical that the fires had made me so emotional without me doing anything. So the idea quickly came: I’ll do 24 hours of burpees.”
